I don't know if it's just the company I was keeping, but pretty much everything I saw of the area from Braintree all the way to Plymouth (especially Randolph, Holbrook, and Brockton) was very drug infested and kind of run down. I'm not an authority, but given my impressions, I couldn't in good conscience recommend anybody move there if they want to go to the park with their kids.

.
I would change that to you know NOTHING about the southern burbs. Your comments are akin to someone driving through Lawrence and declaring the entire north shore drug infested and run down.

Take a drive through Hingham, Duxbury, Cohasset, Norwell, Hanover and other towns in the area and you will see a totally different south shore.

You misread her message. She, Beachcomber was trying to say that there are certain towns, in her opinion, that are also not so desirable on the North Shore. She was NOT saying that the North Shore does not have wonderful towns. She was responding to a very uninformed poster who thinks that the South Shore is Brockton, Holbrook, etc. which it most certainly is not. Any more than Revere or Saugus represent the North Shore!

I hasten to add that I don't like to put down ANY towns - "even" the so-called less desirable towns. I have a dear friend who grew up in Revere, a real old fashioned Italian American: She has a Ph.D. in laser physics and is a much published author of repute. She was nurtured by her environment. I have met people from well to do towns who are not nearly as productive or nice.

My comment was actually in response to chaxey.

And I tend to agree with you about those so called undesirable towns. My beautiful wife, a Ph.D., grew up in a pretty down trodden community!

I simply didn't mention them because my argument was much stronger without including them...!

My point was not to convey that the north shore sucked, though I do realize I took a few swipes intimating that this was my opinion. For this I do apologize as it seems I hurt your e-feelings; I was just irritated that that other poster was so utterly and completely incorrect concerning her description of the south shore. This is a disservice to those people using this forum as an informational resource.

The North Shore and South Shore are pretty much geographic doppelgangers. To say you dont' like one vs the other is pretty asinine and akin to arguing that the celtics are better than the bruins... oh wait... Sorry, they are!

Too soon!?

Kidding aside, they are the same friggin place. If you watch Fringe, the north shore vs south shore is like comparing parallel universes; they're the same but with slight nuances that are differentiating, but marginally so.

Nah, no feelings hurt. I just thought you didn't know!

I am a SAHM on the North Shore and I see very few nannies. I take my kids to many different parks, playgrounds, farms and kid places, and every town is booming with moms and kids and can be described as family-friendly, like - Beverly, Danvers, Salem, Swampscott, Marblehead (the most nannies), Ipswich, Hamilton, Gloucester, Newburyport, Topsfield, Georgetown and Melrose, of course.

If you want more info about kid things to do on the North Shore, check out North Shore Kid.

What a great site! Just checking it out makes me want to move there Love the shoreline!
To OP: I can't offer much insight into the area, but if you also run a search in this forum for older posts, you'll find other discussions on the topic.
BTW Sometimes Duxbury is called "luxbury"

OP here--we're still househunting! We need to be close to family who are all in Norwell, which is why we're not considering the North Shore. I do think I prefer the feel of a Concord type place, but it appears we're going to end up in Cohasset or Hingham once we find the right house. . . I appreciate all of the input.

Congrats! Both beautiful towns. I live in Hull and my wife loves the Old Colony network Library and takes advantage of many of the programs for young children they have in Hull and Hingham.
