Hi. We are a family of 4 w/children ages 3 & 8mos. Possibly moving to Boston from Atlanta... I've been looking online for rental places & have found some that seem nice enough in Somerville & Dorchester... but haven't heard very good things about these areas. I was hoping someone could shed some light...

Also, is it hard to find places that are deleaded? Do landlords disclose this easily?

Thanks for your help!

Somerville is safer than Dorchester, and Davis Square in Somerville is great. I know less about Dorchester, though, I think there are more interesting areas architecturally. What is your motiviation for selecting these areas? There may be some other options. Lead paint is present in many older apartments in the Boston area, and if the landlord does not advertise as de-leaded, then it is likely there is lead paint. The main concern would be if there is lead paint on doors and trim, and if it is peeling.

Whinton,

The main motivation is price & needs/wants... We know that we will have to down-size b/c our $$$ in Boston will be stretched thin in comparison to Atlanta... We want very specific things in the unit that we rent like 1.5-2bath, 3-4 bed, near public transportation b/c we'll more than likely get rid of one of our cars & my husbands job is smack in the middle of Boston... Most of the places I've seen online are in Somerville & Dorchester...

Thanks for your help!

Just FYI, you may be able to open your options regarding locations depending on your budget. Quincy has several stops on the subway red line, one part of Arlington is within walking distance to the Red Line, and Newton is on the green line and has commuter rail (I think there is express bus service as well). You might also check the complete commuter rail maps and schedules on the MBTA website to determine if taking that into Boston would work for you, which could provide even more options. BTW, I also moved to Boston from Atlanta and got rid of one car.

Have you considered Burlington area, some new complexes, or fairly new in the area that are 3br plus den and 2bath. Not sure what you can afford for rent but that is about 20 min out of Boston. Just a thought.

Best Wishes on your move ...

I agree with whinton regarding Quincy. It is definitely an option. Check out Malden also.

Somerville has come a long way. The West side from about Union Sq. to Davis and all along the Cambridge line is a good area. Inman is a really nice area and might be best for a family. There are kid friendly restaurants, a great ice cream shop and Stell Bella toys - one of the best toy stores around (they do free story times). It's also about a 10 minute walk to Central Sq. T stop. Central Sq. opens up a lot more options. There is a Whole foods and Harvest Co-OP right in the center of the area.

Look for apts in between Inman and Union for better deals. We found it difficult to find deleaded apts in the area. Good luck.
