Thanks again UsAll!!!! I will be working M, W, F until 11.30 and Tuesdays and Thursdays I will be taking BIOT E-215 Elements of Clinical Investigation or some other medical class that ends at 9.35pm. You described yourself as "a strong and taller male and someone who knows all the areas intimately, is a longtime big ciy dweller, is extremely street-smart, is somewhat armed when out in public anywhere and always hyper-alert." Unfortunately I am the opposite, quite frail, female, someone who doesn't know anything more than Boston is somewhere out there on the East Coast, rural, not street smart and never alert.
But I could be armed like you - not that I will use that weapon against anyone even if I was forced to, but because of the deterrent factor. I am curious to know what weapon you carry on you.
I am thinking of buying a bear repellent - those are the only kind available in my area because we have many problem bears. Not that I will ever have the courage to use it or will ever use it but if I have it around my neck, the bad guys may stay away from me.
This post really concerns me. I moved from a small, rural area in the South to a Boston area college at 18 and spent several summers alone in the city working internships. I learned to be street smart long before I came - I simply would not have been able to exist if I spent all of my time afraid. Boston is one of, if not THE, safest major city in the US. I would say the red line is the safest of all of the subway lines - it's almost amusing to me to be afraid of the vast majority of it (though, as mentioned, the Ashmont end might make me hold on to my purse a little tighter).
Is Boston an absolute must for you? Given your paranoia about your ex and this post, it seems like finding another school in a more appropriate setting would be best for you.

Let's share the "arms" info through private correspondence (instead of on this public forum). Maybe DM (Direct Message) and, through DM, provide your email address and I'll provide mine. I can give descriptions and send photos of said items.
Or perhaps if you visit the greater Boston metro area, we might meet & I can show you around and get you familiar with all the useful or mentioned areas. (I work out-of- home, so I am pretty much in control of my day-to-day time) . . . or at least we might talk live on the phone when needed while you are here.

I am spending a month working at a hospital in Alberta, Canada that is 300 miles away from my home. I already have all my belongings in two bags and one handbag and won't be going home from here but will be flying into Boston. I am scheduled to land in Boston on May 5. Yes, thank you, it would be a great idea if you can show me around - I could use a friend for sure! I know absolutely no one on the east coast. For that matter, I know no one outside of Canada. I have sent you my email addy through a DM.

Well that's encouraging because if you can make it, so can I. Are you also a girl like me?
(That link says the Red Line is the most unsafe)

I'll respond to your DM as soon as I can get to it (have to try to prepare my taxes now).
Since I originally brought up Arlington being a relatively safer option than taking that part of Red Line late at night, I just want to clarify: you do not need an UZI to live in Quincy! It is more urban, and the train ride at midnight could be too skeevy for your tastes. That's why I suggested Arlington (that, and it seemed to fit your lifestyle better). Still, no need for firearms. Just try the commutes for yourself and see how you feel about them.
Okay. If you are so concerned with safety, giving out personal information to a stranger on the internet about procuring weapons may not be the most prudent thing you can do.

A mace or pepper spray cannister is an item that can be legally carried by a state resident (IF you first register with the police headquarters of your city/town/jurisdiction of residence and get approved first by them). They will do a criminal and background check and then render their decision. It cannot be sold to anyone unless they first show that they have a police permit to acquire & possess it . . . and this indicates that the police will know about anyone who tries to obtain such a defensive item. You are subject to criminal prosecution for having such an item without police clearance.
I'm not talking about guns, razors, and what-not. And she is not a stranger; we have exchanged contact info, corresponded back-and-forth, and will be speaking live. Don't be so quick to jump to unfounded conclusions. I'm a wise person, not an imprudent fool.
Yeah, you're right. This isn't creepy at all and clearly, the OP is a good judge of character....what was that part about her needing to wear a disguise when outdoors lest her ex see her?
I live in Quincy. Personally, I wouldn't recommend Quincy Center if you are getting home late at night. There are a lot of sketchy characters in that neighborhood at all hours of the day, and it's definitely worse at night.
In the discussion of supermarkets in Quincy, it wasn't mentioned that there's a large Hannaford supermarket between the North Quincy and Wollaston stops. Hannaford is a standard New England grocery chain.
Sounds like Arlington may be better for you, though, with the late hours. For a working-class city of almost 100,000 people, Quincy is fairly safe, but I think you'd have fewer possible issues in Arlington.
