The Duck Tour would probably be your best bet. You get to see everything and it's reasonably priced, and the guides are really, really annoying to the locals (which means that as a tourist you'll find them highly entertaining.)

As far as Southie goes, there's not really anything there worth making the trip for. It's not really anything like you've seen in the movies, the working class gruff is pretty much gone from it, as is the Irish spiel. It's either yuppies living in renovated condos on the East side or fake wannabe thugs living in the projects on the West side. Nothing really worth going out of your way to see. The one exception would be CAstle Island, it's a really really nice place to take a walk in the spring and summer, but there's other ones that are better elsewhere and you don't have to go across town on trains and buses to get all the way out there.

Walshy, I agree with the Duck Tours, Castle Island. Broadway St in SOuthie has come a long way with all kinds of resteraunts and Irish as well. The Faragaut house is a good one on Faragaut St. (not sure if I spelled tha right)

Dam, now I am craving a hot dog by the fort

Oh yea, to the OP: If you are still interested in Irish pubs, check out the Black Rose Tavern, 160 State St. It's more of a restaurant than it is a bar, but it's pretty reasonably priced considering how good the food is and the location of the place. They used to have live Irish music too, not sure if they still do or not.

Alternatively you can check my old watering hole, Cornwall's in Kenmore Square.

Bob-

The Farragut House is now The Local 149, and I highly recommend it next time time you're down there. It's easily my favorite spot for food and drink in Southie now.

Local 149 - South Boston - Boston, MA

Try to go for lunch or on a week night if possible. That place is not too big and it gets packed on Friday and Saturday night. Great beer selection and pretty good food. Plus there are some non-resident parking spots near by.
