Default Relocating to the greater Boston area

I am originally from the mid-Atlantic region of the USA and I relocated to Tokyo after finishing school and having been living here since. My wife and I are planning to relocate to the USA in about 15 to 18 months, and we kind of have our eyes set on Boston.

While city-data.com's information has been a great help, I was hoping someone might be able to suggest some sources where I might be able to find out more about the job market and job opportunities in the greater Boston area. I currently work as an electronics engineer, but I think I could transition to corporate IT if given the chance. I'm not so picky about what I want to do as I would like to go back to school part-time. In the past I have moved to new places due to jobs, but this time I would like to live where I want to live. Coming from Tokyo I am not so worried about cost of living I *think*. I need to find some data of the actual costs so I can compare though.

Also, I had a question about apartments. I've never rented anything more than a room when I was a student in the USA and I am largely clueless about the process. In Tokyo, you have to have a guaranteer to sign your contract, your monthly salary must be three times the rent, and in general you have to have been working a steady job for about three years as a full-time employee. In the Boston area is there any sort of requirements for rental, like guaranteers or employment history? Initially, the plan is to live in a temporary/corporate apartment until I find a job. I am hoping that will be enough...

Also, in general (average), how much should I be looking to pay for a two bedroom apartment in a low-crime area relatively near a metro stop (within 15 minutes by foot)? I do plan to commute using the metro, so I imagine I'm looking on the upper end of "average". I have been looking at online sites like apartments.com and it seems like everything starts from $1600 a month. Is that the norm?

Thanks for any help and insight!
