I work for Walmart! I noticed there aren't ANY inside of boston which is fine but it is stopping me from moving in the center of the area. I want to be IN Boston! What kinds of jobs are there for people who only have a few years of retail? Would it even be possible to make a living in there?

Yeah, I noticed that too when I was up there. No Walmart, no Target (or at least I didn't see one), no Kroger's/Randall's or Safeway/HEB or Central Market, etc. For retail, there's always commercial shopping like Macy's but yeah, Boston is interesting in that regard.

There are at least four Targets in the area & one is a super Target in Everett (it's on The T).

Plenty of retail jobs but none you can survive on, at least right off the street (relatively). Maybe if you work 2 or 3 jibs at once but why?

We don't have HEB, Kroger's, Safeway, etc. up here in Massachusetts, or anywhere in New England. I don't think I have encountered any of those stores even in New York and New Jersey.

There is a Target right in the city at the South Bay Center. Other than that, the rest out located just outside in places like Watertown, Everett, Somerville and Revere. There has been some talk of Target opening up one of their smaller, urban stores in Downtown Crossing. But if that does happen, it's still a couple of years away.

Walmart wanted to open up stores right in the city, but Mayor Menino put the kibosh on that since he doesn't care for the way they treat their employees as far as benefits are concerned. He wanted them to make big concessions.

I should give the mayor a high five because it's true. WM is the worst company to work for. I'll have to look into target or something although getting into costco would be a win job for anyone in retail!

Ahh yes, I plan on renting a room because, obviously, it's expensive living there and not many retail associates make enough!

There is a nice Costco right by the Home Depot and the super Target in Everett which are accessible by public transportation.

Quincy has a Walmart, but it's inconvenient for me without a car even while living here.

You could take the subway out of Boston, then a bus for ten minutes, only to walk up a big hill to get there.

Roche Brothers is a well-regarded supermarket chain in the 'burbs which gets high marks for best places to work in the state.

Panera Bread continues to expand here and always seems to be accepting applications, but not sure how competitive it is to get hired.

Even if there was a Walmart in Boston, you couldn't make enough working there to be able to afford to live in Boston... So if you want to live in Boston, you're going to have to find a job that pays more than Walmart wages.
