Work in finance. Going to be moving to boston next year and working in the fin district. Trying to get an early sense of the best neighborhoods to live in. 23 yr old male. Pretty flexible on rent. Capping it around $2k. Looking to be close to work, but also in an area with a vibrant nightlight life

Thoughts?

Being 23 and wanting a night life, I'd say Allston or Brighton, a lot of college, but also a lot of people stay after they graduate. Tons of Bars / Restaurants. The trolleys run through both so easy to get in town for work.

You have quite a few options within your budget. Honestly, I would put Allston-Brighton towards the bottom of my list. A commute to the financial district along the Green Line would be relatively long (about 35-50 minutes) and - to be honest - if you're not an undergrad, you might feel a little out of place in Allston. That said, your money would go farther here than in the other neighborhoods I'll recommend.

The Fenway-Kenmore area is a good location in the heart of the city's nightlife and roughly a 20-25 minute commute from the financial district. The South End is a similar distance from downtown but tends to be a bit pricier and has a somewhat more chic/upscale vibe. Depends on exactly what kind of nightlife you're looking for, I suppose.

The North End would obviously be ideal as you could simply walk to the financial district in a matter of minutes. Generally more expensive than Fenway, but it's also considered a nightlife hotspot and is a very short walk from all the bars and restaurants around Faneuil Hall. You'd just have to battle through the swarm of tourists on Hanover St in the summer.

There are also options on the other side of the Charles. The Central Square area of Cambridge is about a 15-25 minute commute from the financial district, has plenty of people in your age group and some great nightlife options. It also tends to be more affordable than the other neighborhoods I've mentioned, even if certain areas are a little less clean. Davis Square in Somerville is another great option for your criteria with a very vibrant bar and restaurant scene for 20-somethings; about 25-35 minutes from downtown along the Red Line. The biggest disadvantage of this area compared to the others is that you can't really walk there from Boston in a reasonable amount of time.

The North End is a separate neighborhood.
