Just these two simple changes will save you nearly 1k per month. And like a PP said, you'll be happier with roommates. Living in a studio alone in Boston is lonely and boring. In Miami that would be fine, but not in BOS.

Regarding moving, most college boys do heavy lifting for fun. Offer beer, and they come running. If you seriously can't find anyone to help you move, PM me and I have people I know and trust who I can get to help you.

HINT: Three Green Lines go directly to BC. You could roomee along any one of them.

Thanks Sobe but there is no way I'm giving up my car since I may be moving back to Miami a year from now.
I'm so tired from work and checking out a crappy place today. I had no idea it was so hard to find a good roommate situation...I miss being able to have my own 1 bedroom with a beach view

Watertown is pretty safe, probably safer than the area right around BC. I would say that if you're that worried, maybe look into renter's insurance and talk with the locals about the crime rates around that specific block. Honestly, unless there were sketchy characters hanging out right outside your windows (I've never seen any such person in Watertown and I used to work at the Arsenal Mall), I don't see much reason to pass up on the room. Obviously, your personal preference trumps my opinions, but I think you need to be a bit more flexible here.

I will say that your standards may be a bit high. For example, I think you may need to ditch the futon or the queen sized bed. Not sure how feasible it would be to find a room big enough for both. I would expand out in terms of location. Neither of the locations you listed other than Watertown have the best bang for your buck, especially Brookline and Newton. I would add Roslindale and JP to the growing list. As mentioned, I would ditch the car and take the T. Even if you can't outright sell the car for whatever reason, just reducing the amount you use it can save money. BC is crazy T accessible and you have options among several green line trolley routes and bus routes.

Movers shouldn't be that expensive. For just the items you listed, I could persuade some frat guys to move everything for about $50 a piece and maybe some cheap beer. You could maybe even pay them less if there are few stairs/elevator instead of walk-up.

Ditto the suggestion for Watertown. Apartments are a bit cheaper, it's safe and most places will offer free off street parking. There's great bus service in the area, and it's close to Boston and whatever hotspots you want to go to.

Ditch your current apartment. It doesn't sound like it's a keeper to me.

I would throw in Roslindale again here - I actually have a small cadre of fellow PhD friends from BC who live here with me. You'd find a far, far cheaper room, I think I saw some on CL for 350-500 range today doing a quick check. If you are dead set on keeping the car, it is a pretty quick ride up West Roxbury Parkway/Hammond Pond to get there. Most of them do it in about 20-25 minutes. Not as sure about pet-friendly, but I know that Rozzie tends to be a bit more pet-friendly than other parts of the city due to the higher number of professionals living here. Further, it is pretty safe if you stay in the general proximity of the square. My wife and I walk around here late at night all the time and have never had a problem. In general, I would say that you ought not to worry so much about safety. It's a city and stuff happens sometimes, but I would say that not being caught up in the illegal drug trade, gang feuds, and using a bit of common sense with regard to your surroundings reduces the likelihood of that stuff ever happening to you pretty drastically! PM me if you have any questions about Rozzie.
