It is so easy to stereotype the housing projects, so here I go... To me anyone who gets to live in the Egmont Street project is fortunate as compared to the poor folks stuck in Roosevelt Towers or Bromley Heath or (RIP) Columbia Point. Egmont isn't known for gangs or drive-bys or random shootings and it's a swell neighborhood. One would rather have one's own home but for public housing, Egmont seems way better than most.

Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan, Chelsea are areas to stay away from. Do not move to any of these places and you'll be safe

Dorchester has more than 100,000 people, and covers a landmass that is almost as big as all of Quincy in the south. It has many smaller neighborhoods like Ashmont Hill, Savin Hill, Neponset and Lower Mills that are perfectly cute and relatively safe to live in. The COL is, at least for Boston, still manageable, and for those who value diversity of economic and ethnic/racial variety, these neighborhoods fit the bill nicely.

I live in Boston for over 10 years now. Places in Boston that I've lived are Dorchester, Roxybury, & East Boston.

I've been all over the city. Places like Dorchester, Mattapan, Roxbury, East Boston, & Chelsea are just inner city neighborhoods. Some parts of these places you would get the usual police sirens, see fights, etc. Just typical city stuff.

Now the parts that are actually dangerous, like parts where you can get robbed in the day light or get hit with a stray bullet, and actually see active gangs on the streets, you have to go exactly between Roxbury & Dorchester. Right in the middle of Dorchester & Roxbury lays Uphams Corner, it's probably the most ghetto area of Boston. On Uphams Corner (end of Dorchester) main road is the beginning of Dudley Street (a street that goes throughout the most ghetto areas of Roxbury. On Uphams Corner you would find a lot of stores like Payless, Family Dollar, Foot Locker, etc. It has a lot of people, a lot of noise, and a lot of cars. During the day it isn't that bad, AT LEAST IN 2014. In 2006 one day I was riding the bus home from school and when we stopped on Uphams Corner, we heard a couple gun shots then when we looked everyone was running out of an MBTA bus. What happened was someone in the bus got shot by a bystander who was outside. Anyways, don't ever think about walking there during the night because you will definitely get robbed. During day, the back streets that connects with Uphams Corner always have gangs in groups on side walks. The thing about these kind of gangs in Boston is they don't mess with you unless you mess with them. There was one gang on Uphams Corner a couple years ago that use to dress in red & black, I don't know if they're still around but sometimes you go through some backstreets there and you'd see them in red & black hoodies, it was clear that you're in a gang territory.

On the other side of Uphams Corner is Columbia Rd. A long road that goes through some of the most dangerous hoods in Dorchester. Then on the other side of Uphams Corner is Dudley Street which goes through Roxbury. Both Columbia Rd & Dudley Street are similar, long road with lots of project buildings and back streets.

Hmm enough with that, the other dangerous part near Boston is Chelsea. Chelsea isn't as bad as it was a couple years ago but today it's still easy to get robbed there or have your vehicle stolen. There's also active Latino gangs in Chelsea.

Hope this helped. This is for 2014 Boston though. Today the city is in no form bad. It's probably one of the most safest cities in America. It's only a few places like parts of Dorchester & Roxbury that is bad. Also some parts of East Boston and neighboring Chelsea. These are places with lots of apartment buildings, so poor people areas. Places like Mattapan, and a lot of parts of Dorchester & Roxbury are VERY RICH areas, don't get confused.
