Hi - I'll be flying into Boston Logan on a red-eye flight in April and driving to Chatham, middle of the week. It will be around morning drive time and I'll be renting a car. Any advice on best car rental place, best route, things or places to avoid? Is there another transportation option better than driving? Thanks!

Logan Airport will offer the same array of rental car companies that most other airports in the country offer. I would base my choice off of price and options of cars, but that's just me.

The drive should be pretty smooth. You will be going against rush hour traffic. By the time you land, get your luggage, get the car and are on the road, it will be after 9 a.m. I am sure. It will of course also depend on where you are coming from and what airline you fly as far as what time you actually get on the road.

From Boston, the best way to get down the Cape is to take 93 south and then get onto Route 3 south. It will be a reverse commute given that you are flying in in the morning. 93 south could be a little slow moving at certain parts, namely due to the fact that the southbound side goes from 4 lanes down to 3 as the zipper HOV lane uses the 4th lane for northbound service.

Buses do go from Boston (South Station Bus Terminal) down to the Cape, but I don't believe any of them goes as far as Chatham. I think only Hyannis and Woods Hole have direct bus links. So you could take the bus to say Hyannis and then take a cab to Chatham. I personally would rather take a car down there, but if you're budget conscious, then the bus to cab route will be cheaper. Or Cape Cod has a bus line that should from Hyannis to Orleans and it has stops in Chatham I believe.

Or rent a car once you get to Hyannis if you're going to be needing one for a while.

Thanks - I'm getting in at 6:30 AM after a redeye from Arizona. So I was thinking I'd grab breakfast and make it a leisurely morning drive. I will only be on the Cape for one day and then have to head back to Boston. So a car probably is the better choice.

It sounds like a car would be your best choice. As far as routes go, there's really only one way to go unless you want do some random sight-seeing.

From Logan take 90 W - 93 S - 3 S - 6 W. Once you're on 93 S, it's pretty much a straight shot to the Sagamore Bridge, and Route 6 is directly connected to that.
