Hey,

I currently work in Copley Square but living in Waltham. I'm considering getting rid of my car and moving into the city. I'm looking for a studio/1BR with a max budget of $1300 per month(for rent, not including utilities).

Is this unrealistic? I'm looking for something modern, laundry in the building, and near the T. Closer to Copley Sq, the better.

Would I be better off to look for a 2BR/1B in the price range of $2400 and go the room mate route?

Thanks for any and all info!
-BW

Keep your car and move to Oak Square.

Express bus into Copley, plenty of parking too.

A 1br/studio in a modern building for $1300 will be a tough find in the city. You could probably find a 1br in Southie for that money, and take the 9 bus to Copley. But it wouldn't be a modern building, and probably wouldn't have laundry.

I think you could find a studio for that.

As it stand now, I live in Waltham in a 3BR/2.5 BA with 3 room mates. My portion of the rent is $800 + utilities. All in all is cost about $1000 to live here. Then I have my car payment, auto ins, gas, and parking, which add up to nearly $1000 a month.

I want to get rid of the car and all the expenses that come with it and move into the city. I also want to be able to save money in the process. I'd like to live in the city for around $1300 + utilities..

If I can't make Back Bay area work, where could I live in the boston area with out a car on that budget? Living really close to a T line would be crucial.

I'd like to simplfy my live a little and get the city experience for a few years. But maybe I can't afford it..........

So you're spending 2 grand (rent plus car) per month now. You can almost live by yourself in Boston for 2 grand (not Back Bay). Start adding roommates and you can save money. I think it's feasible - maybe not Back Bay however. South End, Cambridge, Somerville, North End, Charlestown.

If you're living in Waltham and paying 800 + util. WITH roommates, it's not a good deal. I'm living with my bf in Waltham in a convenient location in a 1BR for 1000/month (so each of us pays 500), and the place is not bad at all. Waltham should be a lot cheaper than that. I think Jamacai Plain might be a good choice for you - my friend is in a very nice, big, charming house with 3 other roommates and they pay about 500-700 a month (depending on the size of the room). You can take the Orange line conveniently to Back Bay and walk/transfer to Copley square.

It's not the same, you and your boyfriend are splitting ONE bedroom. You each are paying $500 a month for half a bedroom. Your one bedroom is a $1000 a month. The OP's one bedroom is costing him $800 a month, and that's $200 LESS than your one bedroom.
