There are too many to list.
I suggest making a wish list...
distance from the city.
the kind of setting (suburban, urban, rural, ...)
price range
the size of house, size of yard, ...
the kind of amenities that are important to you..
size of town
If you go to yahoo real estate, you'll see median prices for each town. In general, you will find highest price towns are ones most people love to live in.. (supply and demand). For example, Wellesley....., it has a nice downtown, good school, convienent to major highways, easily going into Boston, nice parks, close to hosiptal, Wellesley College, Babson College, .... median house price... $900K

The closer you are to Boston, the less land you get and the higher the cost. The decision you make should really be based on where you will work (commute time), cost of home, how much land you would like, new home vs. old, rural, suburban neighborhood, etc...
Once you know the answers to these questions, let me know and I will be able to help you more.

I just wanted to give you and example of my town. I live in the town of Methuen (20-25 minutes north of boston- on the NH line). I have a home that was built in 2001, with 3000 sq. feet, 1 acre of land, and 1/2 mile from a great school. My home is worth around 530k. I am very close to all highways that would get you to points N,S,E,W. I love my town based on the small community feel, but the population is large enough to be considered a city (which gives our schools more federal money). You could find a similar community closer to Boston for upwards of 900k+. It really does depend on what you are looking for.
If you have any specific towns that you would like research or guidelines on. let me know and I can try to help you make an informed decision.
