Not sure how easy it is to obtain mace in this city. Perhaps others can advise on that.

Just pop into the NEU police station on Columbus Ave. and chat with an officer off duty. He may provide good insight.

To get mace (or pepper spray, at least, that's what I was going to apply for), you have to get an FID card. I walk alone a lot at a park that is sometimes very busy and sometimes very empty, and thought about getting a card. The application didn't look very intimidating, it's just a card for pepper spray (and/or mace) nothing else.

I decided against it when my son, who had joined the army after 9/11 and had a chemical and biological warfare specialty (I had been hoping he'd choose morse code specialist) explained that there are a lot of components that go into using ps/mace....your chances of getting sprayed can be better than the attacker, if the wind is wrong, for example.

I was out for a run one night when I must've startled a couple girls walking on the sidewalk. One of them reached for what I assume was pepper spray and yup, they certainly got the worst of it. All I could hear was coughing and gagging as I jogged off. I couldn't help but chuckle.

In hindsight I'm probably lucky she didn't have a license to carry.

Serves 'em right = f'in stupid paranoid Boston b88ches! Scared of their own shadows. Imagine that - gonna mace a poor guy doin' nuthin' but going for a jog. Good thing you didn't say good morning. They prolly woulda shot you!

Maybe YOU should get a license to carry so you can shoot any dweebs who look like they might mace you for jogging.

I used to have a can of pepper spray when I lived in Miami. Only used it once....on myself

I was in a public restroom stall and way playing with the pepper spray can (it was on my key chain)...decided to spray a little on the stall to see what it would be like. I inhaled all of it and was in a coughing fit. I ended up abandoning it when I went to the Smithsonian because they would not let me bring it in the museums.

Problem is I don't know if the NU Police are allowed to patrol that far away from 700 Columbus Ave. which is NU territory. Walk across Tremont Street and you are already off campus without even access to an NU police phone. I may be wrong in this regards but the OP really chose a tough place to live and is in quite a tough position. I mean seeking to move so early in the lease for a reason that has nothing to do with the apartment itself is hard. If the landlord is proud of the neighborhood, the OP's reason may come across as degrading and even if the landlord grants release, he/she may not give good recommendations to the next landlord. Better the OP try to stick it out or find someone to sublet although her reason sure will scare away any sublet except the most desperate. The weather is turning cooler in the upcoming months and although cold weather alone is not a good deterrent of crime, people won't be outdoors as much either.

I think that we really do a bad decision to rent this apt....We find that there have 2 shooting near the apt in last month.......We are very afraid if we are killed on our way to home...

OMG, what can we do now? I pray anyone will help us...
You really are a piece of work. First you tell the entire world you are one of three female students.

Next, you tell the whole world where you live, within a very close proximity.

Then you tell the whole world that twice a week you come home after 8pm.

Then you tell the whole world you are students at Northwestern.

So, exactly what kind of help were you looking for, someone to help you move, give you money or a step by step training manual on now not to be stupid and broadcast to the whole world where you live, that you are obviously a female who can't help herself and about what time you get home at night?

This can't be serious. If it is, do yourselves a big favor, get off the Internet and stop telling everyone your business and how to find you. Then, MOVE!

Graduate students? Please.

I had to google the intersection since my memory has grown a bit faulty in the years I've been away. Yeah, you would have to have a certain level of street smarts to live around there. I've lived in worse areas, but I also wouldn't go out of my way to live at that intersection (more so for aesthetic reasons). The OP doesn't sound street smart at all; sounds like an international student who may have heard a lot of stories about gun violence in America and is now jumping at shadows.

Unfortunately for the OP, he above post is dead on. The 4th link in my google search for "Hammond St Boston" was the OP's first thread. There was also a link to the same post on Yahoo (FYI to the OP, I hope you didn't decide on this place based on the answers you got through Yahoo since most people who post answers on Yahoo Answers are trolls). This presents a huge problem in that you have a LOT of personal info out there that can make you very vulnerable to predators. Just a quick google search shows me that there are three young female students living on the relatively short block of Hammond near Tremont, poor English, Asian looking name (lord have mercy, I hope this isn't your first or last name), PETRIFIED of the area. Hopefully no one will use this information in an unscrupulous way, but it's very possible that you may have made things worse for yourself. Please be very careful about the information you post online.

Honestly, if you're that concerned, I would just find another apartment, let the landlord know, and move. Yes, there is a good chance that the landlord may hold you responsible for the rent for the remainder of the lease or come after you in court, but it's the price you'll pay for peace of mind.

I can assure you all one thing. The jackasses one needs to wary about on Hammond St are most definitely not reading city data. The OP has nothing to worry about in that regard. They're looking for an old needle in Ramsay Park or peering into parked cars to see if there's any change there so they can get a nipper at Hollywood Liquors.

Maybe they don't read City-Data but they use Google.

Hello? Did you read the comment you quoted? It comes up in searches and probably a lot of searches completely unrelated to City-Data.

The good ol "It can't happen to me" philosophy.
