I'm not clear whether the OP will graduate in LA or transfer to a school here. If the later is the case, that complicates the situation even further.

I live in Waltham, which is about 15 minutes driving and about 50 minutes public transit from downtown Boston. Me and my husband pay $1000 for a one bedroom within 10 minutes walking distance of the commuter rail. However, this isn't the norm for the area. 1 bedrooms usually start around $1200/mo and 2 bedrooms start around $1500/mo.

Anyway, if you drive, it's a no brainer because you save so much money. If you take public transit, it's not really that bad either. Youc an take either the bus or the commuter rail. I can also get to I95 within 5-7 minutes driving and be to Somerville in 15 minutes during off-peak times.
