i am a recent graduate from a local university in kansas. i am international and looking to find a place for less than $1000 (possibly find a roommate). am anticipating the high cost of living but i want to move to a bigger city and find opportunities as well as continue with studies afterwards. any suggestions?
FYI, already purchased a ticket and am excited and nervous about getting out of here.

Congratulations on your achievement in school and on the courage of moving to a bigger city. Boston is a great place for young professionals especially if you want to continue with your study. I know some college students sharing apartments in Quincy MA for around $1,000 a month. Good luck!

I have lived in Quincy for over nine years. I like it overall.

It may be a good starting point for you. You may even like it and stay, instead of living in more popular and expensive nearby spots.

It's a city of 90,000 but feels like a collection of neighborhoods.

Some grit, some nice pockets, many Chinese, still some Irish left.

Relatively safe.

You can easily live with a roommate or two for well under $1000, even in Brookline, Brighton, Beacon Hill or in Belmont which is next to Harvard Sq.

I'm probably going to get flamed for suggesting Allston/Brighton, but I can't really think of a better place if you want a lot of excitement (mostly good, some bad).

As Dm said, try Allston. It's not cheap despite young people galore, and not fancy. But because you're young, try that before Quincy.

Or South Boston, Cambridge and Somerville, the old standbys in most of these similar posts..

Yep, not knowing much about the OP, Cambridge gets my vote.

OP, congrats on graduating. And best of luck wherever you end up.

Watertown (East Watertown is cheaper than Cambridge, but very close to Harvard Square)

Somerville (Union Square!, or East Somerville (awesome location for commuting by car or T))

Jamaica Plain (JP) -- not too familiar with this area but apparently all the cool kids live there.

Allston and Brighton have great location and are full of students of all variety, undergrad, graduate or taking a break ;-)

You might try subletting for 6 months and finding something more permanent once you get a feel for the area.

If you don't have a car, but you have a 1000 dollar budget you can definitely find roommates in Cambridge...

Welcome to Boston! I have spent time in Kansas and as you said you were international you will probably find Boston more similar to home, depending on where you're from than Kansas =D
