So maybe I'm dreaming but I'm planning a trip up to Boston to visit the boyfriend who is from just south of Boston. I'm hoping I don't have to tote grits and fried chicken up there with me( and G-d knows I can't live on clam chowder for very long
) when I go so we've been trying to find a place that serves southern food. Could also be a soul food kind of place. You would think in the entire Boston area there has to be some place right?![]() |

Good luck. Southern food and barbecue up here isn't the same or close to as good as down south. The best place for barbecue up here is Fireflies in Marlborough. The guy that owns it does barbecue the "southern" way.
If you want fresh seafood then New England is the place, but there isn't much for southern food. That is why I love going down to the south to get some of their good food. |

Sadly Bob's Southern Bistro in the South End closed. There's a place in Cambridge called Magnolias that serves Southern cuisine. I've never been there but here's their menu: www.magnoliascuisine.com/menu.htm

Scarletfire- Thanks for the info on Bob's southern bistro. That's the only one we could find but I wasn't aware it was closed.
The link you gave looks promising. I will definitly look into that one. |

For BBQ, there's Red Bones in Davis Square. I grew up in Georgia and must say that I HATEHATEHATEHATE BBQ, but Red Bones actually isn't half bad. My ex grew up in Mexico with a Southern mother, so he grew up on Southern and cajun cooking and he swears by that place.
I would think there would be grits in stores, but to be quite honest, for some reason I have never looked for it! If not, look for polenta. It's basically the same thing, but will make your grits florescent yellow... which isn't a big deal if you're making cheese grits. Just make sure you don't get the ready made stuff. |

The Texas Roadhouse has some of the best ribs around. They say they cook them for 2 days. The rest of the food is excellent also, but is mostly steak. Fireflies has great pulled pork, you can get brisket if you like that, and the rest of the BBQ is really good also. |

There's Chef Lee's II and also Mrs. Jones in Dorchester.

2 words.. Village Smokehouse. Best BBQ around. Red Bones can't compare to the smokehouse. It's located in Brookline Village, right on Harvard Ave.
