I would like to volunteer at 826 Boston, which is located close the intersection of Washington St and Columbus Ave (3035 Washington St, to be exact) but I am concerned about safety in that neighborhood. I do not have a car so I would be taking the Orange Line to either Stony Brook or Jackson Square but I'd still need to walk ~10 minutes to get to the building. I would mostly like be going after work hours, so when it is already dark out. Would you recommend against walking in that neighborhood after dark? Thank you!

I'd recommend against walking slowly around there after dark.

Not advisable, its not a war zone and is on the up and up but its definitely an inner city area...its most dangerous by jackson square and the bromley-heath projects.

Egleston Square is not safe to walk around day or night. If you are caucasian, forget it.

So, no pilgrimage to the Sam Adams brewery? Really? Everyone who gets off the T at Stony Brook is immediately assaulted, robbed, and killed? Wow, you would think they would close the station if that's the case...

Yes, that's exactly what everyone else in this thread said. Very helpful.

Not exactly. It's not a neighborhood to linger in, as I thought I'd clearly posted up-thread. But odds are (particularly in winter) that nothing bad will happen to anybody who has their wits about them. Take swift strides, keep an eye on what lies ahead - so any sketchy groups can be dodged more readily - and definitely go through Stony Brook rather than Jackson Sq even if it's out of the way. I've made the walk from Jackson to the Dimock health center before, and lived to tell about it, but that's not as far-fetched a proposition as many people like to believe.

I think most people are referring to Jackson Square and the immediate vicinity of the Washington/Columbus intersection, not the area near the Stony Brook T stop. They're near each other geographically, yet worlds apart when it comes to safety.
