My girlfriend and I have always dreamed of moving to the Boston area and getting the (insert work in need of @#$% here) out of North Carolina. We plan on moving as soon as she is done with graduate school (in about 2 yrs).
I am ready to "pop the question" and am planning a weekend getaway to Boston..probably around March of next year. I know that is over a year away, but I want all the details planned, have to buy the ring, etc. I like to plan ahead. Anyway, I am thinking about staying on the South End (not really sure yet) but it doesn't matter where the location is relative to that. I have been told that some area around Christopher Columbus park would be nice. I don't want to do it in a restaurant, that is too cliche. I am looking for a more romantic, private moment. No need for everyone to stand up and clap..haha. I don't know much about the city so suggestions would be nice! Also, any suggestions of an elegant restaurant to eat after would be welcomed! Thanks so much! |

Hey, congratulations!
I don't know Boston yet, but maybe out along the coast somewhere? Nice romantic walk on the beach... all bundled up because it's March? but whatever. You've got plenty of time to think of the perfect thing. Best of luck! |

This is a tough one. I like Christopher Columbus Park a lot, and it's very nice by the water, but I'm not sure I'd propose there.
The first thing that comes to my mind is the Public Garden, maybe particularly along the water somewhere near the bridge. It's not quite at its best in March, which is still winter in Mass. (May would be better), but it's romantic. Another possibility is along the reflecting pool at the Christian Science Center down Huntington Av. It's a nice public plaza near the Christian Science Church with a long reflecting pool and skyline views. Boston: Public Gardens on Flickr - Photo Sharing! For restaurants, Mamma Maria in the North End, No. 9 Park. If you go to the Christian Science plaza, it's right next to Top of the Hub. Many feel you're paying for the view and the food is not as good, but the views from 50 floors above Boston are very romantic and it's a nice ambiance. Good to plan way in advance since getting the best table can require an early reservation. Mamma Maria has a few different areas, including a little alcove on the second floor that has only the one table and is very romantic. I'm sure people will have some suggestions other than this but I figured I'd get the ball rolling. Congratulations and good luck. |

This would be a great place, but it would be a drive from where you are planning on staying at this time. This is in Gloucester, but it sure is pretty!!
Hammond You could always stay at a bed and breakfast in the area!! That would be romatic and a nice get away. Best wishes to you and enjoy the planning. |

I'd second Holden's suggestion for the Public Garden as a beautifull place to propose. I'd do it on the little bridge over by the swan boats!

Morton's Steakhouse just opened at the Seaport District (not sure what the exact address is: maybe Seaport Lane). It is a really nice, fancy restaurant not too much over the top. And although you can get weathered out in March how about proposing on a boat (rental)?

great ideas everyone...
The public park is looking like one of my best options. I have forever to think about this, I am just wanting to know some of the nicest areas. I am up for changing the date until May or something, doesn't HAVE to be March--I really wouldn't want it to be cold. they have rental boats? like ones I can rent for just the two of us? (where?) |

I think there are motorboats for rent somewhere but not sure where. There are canoes and kayaks and things available out on the river by Soldiers Field Road in Brighton, but it's a little hard to get there without a car (can take a cab but you'd have to phone a cab to get back easily). A more prosaic option if you like boats is the MBTA ferries, which offer a nice view of the skyline pulling into the harbor, but it would not (probably not even in the mid-day) be just the two of you.
