I'm looking at the area around Mt. Vernon Street in Somerville. I've heard this area is dingy and undesirable but I am skeptical because I heard similar things about some of my past locations (Haverhill MA, Forest Hills Boston) and they were fine.

Is it safe to walk to and from Sullivan Square at night? Are break-ins and violence consistent problems in the area or is it just less pretty than Davis square?

Thanks for your input

It's perfectly fine. Been living here 4 years now (and other parts of Somerville for a total of 10 years) and have had zero problems, and see only one (a cop was called for a domestic disturbance a block over).

It's just less pretty. I live off of Washington St (one of the side streets).

It is the "dingy" side of Somerville, but if you've lived in Haverhill and Forest Hills, you should be fine.

It is a bit of a sketchy area. Just use common street smarts while there.

There is nothing "sketchy" about it. It's just not as pretty as other areas.

I'm glad we've reached a consensus on the sketchiness

I should probably trust the poster who lives in the area though.

I think it was probably sketchy 8-10 years ago - there was some random MS-13 gang violence back them. Personally I think East Somerville/Winter Hill is the most up and coming neighborhood in the Boston area - it all starts with a bistro like East End Grille and a new brewpub like Winter Hill Brewing...

Ahhhh... that's against the C-D forum rule which mandates only listening to people who last drove through a neighborhood 15 years ago and not even the one under discussion.

At least I admit (and post) I don't like Somerville due to its preponderance of vinyl siding.

Its fine. Dont be a human dumba$$ and you'll have no troubles. It isnt as pretty as the other side of somerville, but its pretty low key, save some drunks and quiet homeless people here and there.

Yes, nothing like some quiet homeless people cussing at you for ignoring them to make your daily grind really shine....
