beverly is an easy reverse commute. you can drive up 93 to 128 or make your way to rt 1n. beverly is a cool little town. 3 colleges in the area and a number of bars/restaurants.

i am faced with a possible salem to cambridge commute which will be tough-good luck.

Driving up is really your best bet. It would not be anywhere near as bad going out as it is coming in. By train you'd have to first get to North Station, and then you'd have to work near one of the stations in Beverly to make it work. There are fewer trains going outbound in the morning and inbound in the evening so if you miss the train the next one might not be for a long while.

FYI--I did the "reverse commute" to Beverly for several weeks from Medford...it is NOT an "easy" commute at all. 128 is an enormous bottleneck in places, both on the way to and from work. Not impossible by any means, but my previous commute to Quincy from Medford was quicker by a good 20 minutes.

I did work with someone who took the commuter rail in from North Station, but she lived in the North End.

Really, sucking it up and driving is probably your only option.

Smile Try Commuter rail to Beverly ???? or Drive back roads??

Simple you could take the commuter rail from north Station (boston) to Beverly (opposite direction)

Driving is doable but would take you about 45 min...from somerville. You'd be driving opposite traffic so it wouldnt be that bad, plus there are side roads you can go down to avoid the major traffic tie-ups.

Commuter rail would be doable if you lived in North Station you could grab a bus in the morning (plenty in somerville) to Lechemere or take the subway from Davis Square or Sullivan Station. Sullivan Station would be easiest as it has a all day parking area and can get to north station in two train stops. The reverse commute is doable. but I would suggest using mapquest and finding shortcut routes through the towns. to the north shore. If you go by highway it will take you about an hour with traffic 45 min - 50 min without traffic)

Here is a route I might suggest from Somerville to Beverly without going on the major highways
Use mapquest to follow along

You could take 93 north to the spot pond exit
(Melrose/Medford)
you will exit onto 28 north

Follow route 28 north
into stoneham to
ELM ST.
Turn Right on ELM St.
which will become ALBION In Wakefield
Take a right onto Broadway - just after the VIP gas station on your left
Follow Broadway into Wakefield Center
Take a right onto North St. and then go straight through the intersection onto Nahant Rd.
Follow Nahant Rd to Farm Rd and turn left.
At the end of Farm St. take a right on 129 to Walnut St. - exit on Route 1
Take Route 1 North
At the 129 take a right - Salem St.
Go around the rotary onto Lynnfield St. and then left onto 1st Ave.
Take a Right onto Centennial Drive in peabody
Take Centennial Drive to the T junction of Summit St and Forest St. Turn left onto Forest St and go around the corner
to the right.
Take a right onto Lowell St. 114. and then a left onto
Endicott St. -
Follow Endicott to Gardner St. and take a right on Gardner.
Take a right on 114 Margin St. and then a left on Nursery St.
(one way) Follow Nursery to the end and take a left onto
Liberty Hill Ave. which becomes Kernwood St.
Kerndoowd St will take you into berverly

Another option with less side roads would be
I-93 to route 28 North (Stoneham-Melrose exit)
Right on Elm in Stoneham -
R on Broadway in Wakefield.
R on North St to the intersection in Wakefield Center - Straight onto Nahant St.
Left on Farm St.
Take a right on 129
then your next left onto Montrose Ave. Then a right on Salem St, go down to the intersection and turn left and then onto 128/95 North
(exit 43)
From here it will be an easy commute via 128
You want to head toward 128/gloucester (not 95 NH-Maine)
and you can get off at the beverly exit that is closest to you.

The second option might be best for you if you'd like to learn a good shortcut to avoid the interchange at 93-95..in peak rush periods.

Also get the Eastern Mass guide to metro Boston Arrow Maps. a Yellow map book sold in most stores. it is a great way to learn shortcuts and such and the area. You can highlight routes and such.
it has gotten me out of a lot of traffic jams by finding shortcuts
