Car Insurance Recommendation
Does anyone have a recommendation for who to go to (or stay away from) for car insurance? I'm relocating and need advice because it seems car insurance works in a strange way in this state. Any particular advice for a car in the city?

Can't help since I've never had a car, but you might do better putting this on the Massachusetts board since that has a lot more people who have cars out in the suburbs. Some people on here are in the city and don't drive so much or are registered out of state or whatever.

I have Encompass and went through an Insurance Broker. I live in the suburbs and it's cheaper than it is in the city. I insured one car in the city and in the suburbs, I'm insuring two for less than I was for one. Go Figure ....

Registering a car out of state doesn't work. Many people try to do that because it's cheaper, but to no avail. A friend of mine tried to do that, but the Registry of Motor Vehicles caught up with her 6-8 months later, and she had to register her car here in the Bay State.

How did the RMV catch on? I wasn't suggesting that anyone do it but I've seen a ton of people doing it for years. I had friends in Brighton and Cambridge with driveways and the other people living in those houses had cars registered in every state imaginable except Massachusetts. And these people were working full time and living here, registered to vote here, etc., not students. My friends had to park in the street since they were the only ones with Mass. plates who could get the parking sticker. Curious as to how RMV figured it out other than if they got pulled over or something.
Recently I have been living in Brooklyn, where half the state has Mass. plates because it's so much cheaper. Brooklyn has the highest auto insurance rates of any county in the U.S. I am 32, with a perfect record, and was quoted $3200 a year so I passed on the car since it's not worth the hassle.

We knew some one that lived down in Mass. that drove a big Lincoln Town car and got a brand new one delivered to his home every 2 years. Where did he register his car for years and years? New Hampshire. His son lived in the White Mountains area and he used his address and got away with it for well over 20 years! It used to drive every one crazy that lived in his neighborhood and all of us that knew him! Since then he passed away about 5 years ago, but the guy didn't care, he was a real "bute" old timer, that way and did NOT care what any one thought of him. Can you imagine? Driving this big big Lincoln and not wanting or willing to pay up what you're supposed to pay in insurance! Oh it was sickening and got every one so upset. People actually called the RMV and they never did anything about it. There aren't too many that do that now and if they do? They eventually get caught one way or another these days. This guy put the car in his sons name, that's how he got away with it evidently.
Speaking of car insurance...we use Metropolitan's car insurance, they've been very good through the years, like we never had to switch or anything when we went from one state to another. If you want, go to Metropolitan Life Insurance Company
Click on "Auto Insurance" and they'll give you an online quote. They're extremely good to deal with and they're billing process is very convenient with how they set it up for you. I think they're located basically down in Rhode Island. I only had to call them a few times and that's where there reps were from I guess.
Just my two cents again....
Good luck!

I have friends that do a similar thing and register their car at their parent's address in the suburbs where insurance is still cheaper. They live around Boston, but refuse to pay the extra money. Many of these friend's parents live in MA, a few live in NH and they just keep the NH plates and registration.

If you don't like the out of state plates... call into the Police station (as a good citizen)... they will take care of it...
