I think of a Pilgrim hat or the Mayflower. I don't know if the highway signs still carry this symbol, but when a was a kid, the highway signs had a Pilgrim hat with an arrow shot through it, pointing in the desired direction.

I think they were deemed politically incorrect and done away with, but I always thought they were very amusing.

That was only on the Mass Pike.

Yes on that, especially the swan boats. But the thread title should be "What Is The LANDMARK That Screams Boston?" To me, the symbol is a codfish.

For someone who grew up there, the Citgo sign is a Boston landmark. I doubt most non-Bostonians consider that one as such, though.

Which is precisely what I am getting at.

Boston is an awesome city and one of the best in the US. It's totally weird to me that it doesn't have a symbol or iconic landmark that screams Boston to outsiders.

You can show random pictures of landmarks to strangers and they would mostly be able to tell you where they are. For Boston however, there really isn't one.

Statue of Liberty is NYC, Liberty Bell is Philly, Washington Monument is DC, Golden Gate is SF, etc.

I thought maybe the Liberty Tree but still, that's only local.

on espn/cnn/... interviews when they satellite in a feed from someone from almost anywhere in new england, i see the bunker hill bridge in the background a lot and sometimes the citgo sign. else its the skyline background that looks the same as chicago/new york/philly...

the white h-looking building in the south-end ?

i think the swam boats or duck boats are considered a boston thing.

The contrast of Trinity church and the Hancock building.

Its Boston's equivalent Louve courtyard (IM Pei actually had a hand in both) and truly iconic.

Thanks, someone else said it. People who have never been to Boston talk about going to Fenway Park. To me it is similar to Wrigley Field, you go once and then hope to never go again. They should have torn that place down years ago, but people are so obsessed with it. Overpriced and horrible place to watch a game, but historic and that is why it stays.
