My fiance and I just purchased a condo on Whitten st. I've heard this area referred to as St.Marks/Pope hill/Franklin Park.... basically it's easat of DOT ave which is where I heard it's safer and becoming more gentrified. By all mean we aren't expecting it to be Savin Hill but someplace safe to run and walk the dog. Has anyone heard of anything about the area as far as it's expectation over the next few years and should the be any areas I should avoid?

Default Re

I'm confused because popes hill is not near franklin park. The popes hill area is pretty nice. Franklin park area not so much.

St Mark is the Catholic church on Dorchester Avenue. It's old school to refer to Dorchester neighborhoods by parish boundary-- people were still advertising apartments by parish as late as the 1970s. I'm sure Whitten St is in St Mark's parish. Popes Hill is just to the east across Adams St. You're definitely not in the neighborhood of Franklin Park. Hard to generalize about Dorchester -- I think where you are is pretty good. More assaults and other rough stuff east of Washington St and around Bowdoin St. Active gentrification north of where you are around Savin Hill Ave. Not sure where else-- Melville Avenue and Ashmont Hill gentrification is an old story, like 40 years old. Still very nice in those areas, but not Cambridge nice (meaning not all white and upscale).

Savin Hill has already gotten ridiculously expensive, you'll definitely be seeing some of the gentrification spillover in your area now that a cool half mil in Savin Hill won't get you anything better than a floor in a triple-decker.

Dorchester is known for having a lot of crime so I think that's why he said good luck. Parts are gentrifying and getting better...but I will say my cousin lives in a better part (near adams village) and her house has been broken into twice by junkies. I would be weary of buying I'm certain areas.

Pretty much this. There's a reason Dorchester has the reputation it has.

I think people assume that the rising costs of condo costs in dot means it's a better place to live now but really prices are just getting higher everywhere.
