Default Neighborhood

I am looking for a recommendation for neighborhoods to look at. My wife and I are looking to move to Boston from Portland, ME this summer. We are looking to live somewhere with a big city feel. Our plan is the cut down to one car and relay on mostly on public transit or walk/bike. We are both in our mid twenties and looking for a vibrant young community. Also we have a 70 lb American Bulldog. So we are looking for a safe neighborhood that is dog friendly.

Any ideas or recommendations would be appreciated!

well, you can't really go wrong with Jamaica Plain (JP). it has good access to public transportation, it should be pretty easy to find on street (or even off street if you are very lucky) parking for one car, it's VERY dog friendly, and Jamaica Pond/Emerald Necklace is close by, good for biking, hiking, walking, and doggy fun. the area is pretty eclectic, a good mix of ethnicities, families, etc. some parts are sketchy, so I'd look out for them (mostly stay away from the Jackson Sq./Mozart Park/Heath St. projects area)
