Different pockets. It used to be much more insular, white and poor to working-class and was a fulcrum of resistance to school busing in the 70's. Today there are a lot of young professionals, especially near Monument Ave. and Old Ironsides, and the restaurants and nightlife that goes with that. Up by the Mystic River and heading toward Sullivan Square there is some public housing and still a poorer population. The whole thing has a lot of 3-story houses and such, and some new condo complexes. Nomar Garciaparra has (had?) a place by the water and saved someone from drowning in the water once.

There's bus access (92/93) or walk to the North Station/Haymarket area. The T stops at the community college and Sullivan Sq. are a trek from those gentrified residential areas, but it's close enough to downtown Boston and the North End to be a pretty easy commute.
