Moving to Boston in Jan 07
Hello All,
My family and I will be moving to Boston from NC. We wanted to know what cities/towns are the safest. We are looking for apartment/condo (2+ bedrooms) in the $1600 range that accepts pets and close to the T.

go to www.craigslist.com and go to Massachusetts and rentals. you can put in animals, bedrooms, baths and price range and from there you can see private rentals with or without agents and fees. there are alot of places near the T in your price range, just don't know if you have kids and if that is a factor. Try Brookline,Needham,Newton,Waltham,Woburn and Watertown for starters. Good luck.

Malden
It has a more city rather than surburban feel to it. Homes are built very close together although there are lots of old homes with lots of character. It is right on the "T" line and has plenty of restaurants and shops and even pubs. There is big mix of ethnicities in Malden. Old time irish and italian mixed with new immigrants that are hispanic and asian. Occasionly you do hear about crime in Malden. I would feel secure and safe in Malden, however, you should be smart late in the evening if you are out and about doing shopping, jogging etc... There are a lot of renters in Malden given the large number of two-family homes available. You may want to also look at the city of Medford (next to Malden) offers the "T" as well and commuter rail in the charming section of West Medford where you might find slightly more trees and a more surburban feel if that is your preferenc.

I agree with Mary.
Malden is one of the few towns in MA that have over 10% Asian population and growing. It is close to the T. Rent is reasonable. In most cases, safe. Just like a jungle, there are times and spots where there could be danger. It is a city (concrete jungle) after all. Just beware of your environment. Lock your doors.

Check out the Avalon at Flanders Hill apartments in Westborough, MA. We highly recommend them and the T is right down the road. Hope this helps.

From a Malden resident,
pluses:
Housing costs not as high as communities closer to Boston.
Some nice neighborhoods with large old Victorians.
Orange Line, T, and bus access.
Malls/grocery stores within walking distance.
minuses:
"Downtown" is an urban renewal disaster. No one goes there. If you are looking for coffee shops, restaurants, etc you'll go out of town.
Orange Line breaks down. Often.
Traffic on main east-west highway, Rt 60, during rush hour. Narrow road with backups.
Given size of Asian population, there should be more Asian restaurants ...
