Default I want to walk for a loaf of bread

I want to be no more than 45 minutes from Cambridge. I am looking for a small, reasonably safe, urban community with condos and strong public transportation to Cambridge. I would be able to pay around $400K. I want a center to the town and congenial people with whom to socialize. I am 65 years old and still quite active. I am tired of my dependency on a car and want to live where I can walk to a corner grocery for a loaf of bread.

You can live in Cambridge. You wouldn't need a car if you lived in Cambridge, but it would definitely be helpful. Parking isn't too bad in Cambridge either. The only neighborhoods in Boston I would recommend to live without a car would be downtown, like the north end, south end, back bay, beacon, hill.

You might be able to get a one bedroom for 400k, definitely for 500k.
