OK. Boston is a great city to study in. There are a lot of students and young people. Housing is more expensive here than in many places in the United States, but it is much less expensive than in New York. Boston is mostly safe but there are some parts that are less safe. This is true in just about every city in the United States.
Both cities have great universities and a lot of things to do. They are similar
in some ways but very different in others, and it's hard to describe all the similarities and differences in a short post. New York (where I live right now) is a much bigger city and some people think it is much more exciting, but it is also much more expensive and much more of a city. While Boston is also a city, because it is smaller a lot of students can live in an apartment in a house with a yard, and still be close to the center of the city. That is very difficult to do in New York without moving far away from everything you'd want to do. New York is dirtier and noisier and there is less open space, but a lot more museums and everything stays open later.

Ask the question in both forums to avoid inevitable bias. Just my two cents...

There are more schools in Boston. More people in NYC, and more expensive. Both have plenty to do. I lived in Boston and have been to NYC many times. I would chose Boston over New York any day. You can always make road trips to New York.
Plus the Red Sox are now the Evil Empire.

what are you studying? there are some majors that just have to be done in NYC b/c of the better schools and the fact most of the job market is there (for example, fashion, screenwriting, finance, etc). some schools in the Boston area are more highly regarded in certain majors (for example, NYC has no school as highly regarded as MIT). if you are only coming to the States for school, I would pick a major (or at least narrow down the field) and pick the school w/ the best department in that field in the city w/ the best prospects for a job post graduation (or at least the best prospects for internships)
Boston and NYC are just vastly different cities, each w/ their pros and cons. I agree w/ newyorkfan, you may get a lot of pro-Boston bias posting on the Boston board. it just depends on what type of enviroment you want to live in

MIT has excellent engineering programs. Not sure if Petroleum Engineering is offered though.

ummmm what Kingdom? I take it you aren't talking about the northeast kingdom in VT which is what I originally thought. Basically what everyone said is on target. Boston has tons of schools and although it is very expensive New York is still more expensive. If you end up in Boston definitely try to take a trip to NYC for a weekend, it's really easy.

That's funny - "The Kingdom". I'd like to be from somewhere that just called itself that. Maybe we should call the U.S. "The Empire".
You're not giving enough to go on - it all depends on who you are. If you're used to and addicted to the big city life, then you might find Boston kind of boring. I've had trouble adjusting as it's a much, much more slower paced city than New York.
But, for many that's a great thing. Boston's full of students and really provides a high quality of life for basic living and learning with bigger housing and access to at least decent urban attractions.
