My wife and I are vacationing in Ogunquit, Maine this summer. Flights into Logan are the cheapest. Want to rent a car for the drive up, use during the week and drive back. Never driven in Boston. Thinking with a GPS system, I should be fine. Only other choice is to fly into Manchester or Portland, both expensive.

Am I crazy to try to drive out of Logan?

It's not like you're going to be driving through the side streets of Boston to get out of Logan.

Exiting the terminals, you get on to Rte 90 and then turn on to Rte 95N. It's no more complicated than driving out of any other airport.

Actually, no, that is not how you would drive to Maine from Logan Airport. However, for the OP, don't worry, it's not a problem. The roads are well marked and the Waze app on your smart phone will guide you. If possible, try and arrive in to Logan before 2:00 PM to avoid the evening rush hour.

To get out of Logan to Maine you would drive from route 1a through the Sumner Tunnel to I-93. You would then take I-93 north most likely getting off at 95N and taking that all the way to Maine. The way that raveabouttoast described would take much longer. When you are leaving Logan Airport stay to the right so that you end up in the Sumner Tunnel. If not you can just take I-90 to I-93. It's slightly longer but shouldn't add too much time to your journey. Just ask your rental company about procedures regarding an EZPass. The tolls in the entire state of Mass no longer have a cash option. Have a great trip though, Maine is a beautiful state!

Thank you all! We've been to Maine before but always relied on Massachusetts relatives to drive us. On our own this time and just a bit nervous about driving in a strange city.

You'll be fine. As previously mentioned, Waze will be your best option. Try not to arrive as to travel with the pm rush or be prepared for some traffic. The one time I would not arrive is Friday afternoon.

Certain times of the day it may be better to use 1A N to 60 W to 1 N, which will dump you on I95 N north of town. Definitely use Waze or something similar. You just never know in the Boston area...

How much more expensive are MHT or PWM? They really could save a lot of hassle, again that depends on time of day and the unforeseen.

What is Waze? An app?

Logan is ~30% cheaper, so significant savings. I haven't purchased airline tix yet, but will soon.

Yes, Waze is a navigation app. It uses crowd sourcing to collect traffic information and will route you on the shortest time route. You can set it up to avoid tolls, highways, dirt roads, etc.

Note that if you take either of the tunnels from the airport, there are electronic tolls that will be charged to the rental company which then will charge you. I suggest you take Rt. 1A north to Rt. 1 north to I95 north to Maine.
