What I found odd is that the gray stuff is apparently "considered the authentic New England variety". Hmm. Not in the New England I know...

My Google search says gray doesn't have nitrates in it. The red stuff has nitrates. Now that I know that, if I ever see gray at the same price, I'll buy that. Besides, nitrates are cheaper than the day rates.

I'm doing a boiled dinner Saturday for my yearly thing. I don't understand bothering with a restaurant for it. It's trivial to make. I have parsnip and rutabaga to toss in along with the more standard cabbage, onion, carrot, and potato.

I also picked up sauerkraut, rye bread, Swiss, and made sure I had ketchup, sweet relish, and mayo for the not so secret Thousand Island sauce. Reubens are why I make the boiled dinner. I could just dump the cooked vegetables into the trash and be just as happy.

You people are crazy! The gray stuff is by far the best!

You want it when it's literally falling apart.

Never knew this red stuff was used outside of hash. That's not corned beef for dinner. WTF.

When you’re from West Portugal and lived outside the Irish concentrations in your various Massachusetts addresses, corned beef is the red shrink wrapped stuff in the grocery store that is on sale in March.

I can tell you the good sources for linguica. Corned beef? Not so much.

Same thing in Maine, I bought one once and ended up throwing half of it away. Cabbage was tasty, though...

Uhhh...

You guys have never been to a good Jewish deli in NYC? Yes, I know we're talking about New England, but NYC delis are the standard....and you can absolutely get it locally. And, no, it's not the sliced rubbish you find in the deli section of your grocery store. And it's certainly not gray.

Timberlake, you really need to get out more.

Not talking about a deli sandwich here (grilled reuben?), but a boiled dinner. As far as I'm concerned, gray is the only way to do it.

But the good stuff is the same thing. It's just sliced/carved thinner for a sandwich.

Seriously. Does anyone read anymore? Freaking kids these days. Too ignorant for words.

Thank the lordy for the ignore function. Perfect for mindless children, realtors, and angry spectrumy boys. I heartily recommend it to promote adult conversations. Children lecturing adults happens online too much, in person they are put in their place.

(PS: tourists go for bagels, pizza and delis when in NYC... if you know lots of people that live there and stay with them like I and many people do, that's NOT where you are eating, LOL. Freaking kids.)

I'm guessing some people can't afford (or are too cheap) to pay $22 to $30 for a corned beef sandwich at a quality NYC deli.

(P.S. Only cowards talk trash to/about people they allegedly have on ignore. Freaking cowards!)
