I've seen the occasional discarded umbrella since I moved here, destroyed by wind.

Any suggestions on an umbrella that will survive the wind onslaught that accompanies every rain shower?

Thanks.

Umbrellas are useless. Buy a sturdy poncho.

Get a good quality one with a vent, none of them are kill proof but the vented ones put up more of a fight.

I have a cheap Uniqlo one that has been pretty good. Ultimately there's no defeating Boston rainstorms however.

Having commuted to Boston for the last year, I say skip the umbrella. Get a rain coat with hood for protection. Umbrellas are difficult with the Boston wind, are a danger to others on the sidewalks, and are always left behind on the trains and buses.

Boston isn't Chicago; there are few days with wind so strong that one would need extra protection. I concur with the advice to simply buy a raincoat with a hood.

Boston isn't Chicago, it's worse. The Windy City moniker is unrelated to weather. Chicago doesn't even break he top 10 windiest major cities.

I believe the origins of that moniker have to do with their gregarious politicians.
