I dont see what the big deal is in that the OP doesnt want to live in boston based on COL and doesn't think it's worth it. Just because you think it's worth it doesn't mean everyone else does. Just because there are expert cancer researchers in a place does not mean everyone should want to pay an arm and a leg to live there.

Agreed.
Hard to imagine for a lot of city data people, but people do actually consider things aside from population density, number of craft breweries, walk score ratings, and light rail systems before moving somewhere.

Not at all what I said - I support the OP's choice to not move to Boston. I was saying that his comment that implied there were NOT cancer researchers with hands-on success in Boston was what was odd. There are lots of areas of the country with excellent research happening.

It's also completely irrelevant to anything being discussed.
But yeah, if the OP left it at I don't think it seems worth that COL for me to make the move, no one would have an issue. It was the digs he sprinkled in that became the issue.
It seems with the people here that generally dislike the Boston area didn't, or didn't want to, see those comments for what they clearly were.

Well sometimes high costs of living for no apparent reason to someone might make them kind of angry. The OP got a job here, looked into moving here and just couldn't fathom why it is so expensive to live here.

Actually if you are surrounded by top cancer researchers that typically means that the are affiliated with a top cancer center. Lots of top researchers are funded by Brigham/Dana Farber. In Houston, it's MD Anderson, Minneapolis - Mayo, NYC - Sloan Kettering, LA - UCLA.
The thing about medical research and Boston is the number of private firms and universities working on medical research.

It still won't cure cancer though just by living near a good cancer center. Chemo is chemo...and the research ideas are obviously passed along and not just kept secret in boston.
