We are hurting down here in Baltimore! We need HELP! Murder rate is through the ionosphere!!! I attend various anti-violence townhall meetings and folks always bring up The Boston Model on violent crime and how it could positively be implemented in Baltimore.

What is Boston's formula for keeping violent crime down in the city?!

One statement that pisses me off from some close-minded individuals when I attend community/neighborhood meetings, "That model won't work here! This is not Boston and the mentality of the people are different... So, that sort of policing won't work in this town!"

These statements are coming from so-called, elected and some law enforcement officials.

Demographics. Crime is mostly about demographics. Fewer young people = less crime. Fewer poor people = less crime.

Boston is one of the youngest cities in the country.

The big drop occurred 20 years ago. Something called the 10 point coalition. The model involves cooperation among ministers, community leaders, police and criminal justice people to anticipate and help ward off criminal behavior among likely suspects. The Boston model is offered in contrast to small infractions intolerance and stop-and-frisk police behavior pursued in New York under Giuliani. It worked really well but proved hard to sustain. But no Michael Brown-like cases in Boston!

Joking aside I don't think gentrification has much to do with it. The neighborhoods that generate most of the drug-related criminal activity are not gentrified. High property values translates to no housing abandonment (unlike Baltimore) but I don't know how much that has to do with murder rates.

Isn't that due to the amount of colleges in the area though? Not exactly the demographic that you'd associate with violent crime.

Not sure what demographic is being referenced. Do you people cause crime or not?
