If one finds a private dentist or a national/local dental chain too expensive, is choosing a local community health center's dental department a good option for most people?

I made an appointment with one, but the wait is about three months, which is what I expected. I assume the care at these places is adequate, maybe staffed by less experienced dentists?

Are some of our many community health centers easier to get a quicker appointment?
I assume one can expect a less expensive experience? I'll be paying cash, so maybe I should shop around, though exact prices may be hard to get over the phone without x-rays done there.

The dental schools can still be somewhat expensive if on a treatment plan (well, at least not dirt cheap) and time consuming once one has the initial two or three appointments...before they finally get down to business. I had a tooth pulled 15 years ago at Tufts dental for $50 in an emergency situation but never returned for regular treatments.

Not sure what being a patient at Harvard, B.U. or Tufts dental schools entails vs. visiting a private dentist or dental chain.
