So I have the the MBTA Monthly Linkpass on my charlie card. I've had it for a few years. Recently, I've been having some trouble with it at Charles MGH. Often times I'll tap it and it'll say "Please Try Again," So I try and get the error once or twice before it works. It's literally the only station where this happens. I use Davis, State and Bowdoin almost daily. DTX and Park regularly too. Never an issue. But Charles MGH gives me fits.

Yesterday after work, I went to Charles MGH and tapped my card and got the "Please Try Again" error. So I tapped it again and got "Insufficient Funds." This was a first, so I walked to the machine to double check, and my link pass came right up saying good through 11/30. Walked back to the gate, tapped, and got the "Insufficient Funds" error. Walked around looking for an T employee, and found nobody. I tried one more time, got the same error, and left. I walked over the bridge to Kendall, down the stairs, and tapped my card and it worked right away.

Anyone else ever have issues like this? It's just so weird that it's ONLY Charles MGH. Otherwise I'd say it might be my card or something.

I've stopped needing to use the MGH/Charles street station a year ago but when I was using it, never had that problem. And I too used different stations and had the monthly pass.

You probably just need a new charlie card. Its happens to me at South Station and Wollaston sometimes. I got a new card and it works now.

Those fare booths break down all the time due to high usage. When I used to have a soft plastic pass, the ticket taker ate my pass several times and I had to get a T inspector unlock the machine to get it out. Yes there have been times when a fare gate would reject my monthly pass saying "not enough value" or something absurd like that. These happened at several stations by the way. Then just last month, a fare machine on a bus failed to record my bus to bus transfer and charged me another fare. I had to call the T and speak to a surly customer service rep. to get a refund.

What I would do is report the faulty machines and if you are stuck at the station, press the customer service button at the nearest call box and alert the station rep. of what happened. Just be careful not to press the wrong button (the emergency button) or you end up contacting the MBTA police.

Thanks. I figured I may end up needing a new card. I guess I can do that. It's interesting that it's only at one station too.

I'll try reporting the machines, but I don't see too many people having trouble with them aside from me. The pressure when there's a line of people behind you is intense!

If your card is a few years old it's almost definitely the card. Today it's only a problem at that one station, in a few months it will probably just stop working anywhere.
