It's not the toll money that would be an issue. It's just paying 12 dollars a day for an easy pass or a big fine from the rental car company if you have to pay the tolls by plate. That's why I was suggesting that the OP should just not use the tolls to go in the tunnel.

That's the way I took it. I know it will be $13/day for the transponder (the $12/day is the car rental fee) apparently just to get in and out of Boston and wouldn't need it any other time. That's $65 for the transponder plus the toll fees of course. Or if I don't get the transponder the way I took it from the girl's mutterings at the rental place, it would be a $75 dollar fine every time going through a toll booth without the transponder. So even if I think I figured out how to avoid toll roads if for some reason end up getting in a jam and have to go through one anyway, there's $75. And if I get charged again going through a booth leaving the toll road there's $150...
