Amazon officials reconsidering HQ2 in NYC due to local opposition

“The question is whether it’s worth it if the politicians in New York don’t want the project, especially with how people in Virginia and Nashville have been so welcoming,”

No Amazon in NY.

Amazon pulls out of $3 billion deal to bring HQ2 to Queens

Quote:
Amazon said Thursday it was bailing on locating their new campus in Queens, dealing a serious blow to Mayor de Blasio and Gov. Cuomo and costing the region up to 25,000 high-paying jobs.

Amazon already has a sizable presence in Boston. This may mean some additional jobs come our way.

From the article:

"And the company said it would abandon the search for a site for its new campus, dubbed HQ2.

“We do not intend to re-open the HQ2 search at this time. We will proceed as planned in Northern Virginia and Nashville, and we will continue to hire and grow across our 17 corporate offices and tech hubs in the US and Canada,” the statement said."

The whole thing was disingenuous, this months-long continent-wide competition, hundreds of hopeful suitors, many from regions that could really use a big development like HQ2. They get everyone to put thousands of hours into preparing slick, comprehensive proposals for which no locality received a penny. Then they go and pick the most expensive, prosperous, congested, least-in-need of economic development city on the continent, and still expect huge incentives. No wonder people were upset.

Boston would be a bigger headache than NYC-by a wide margin. Boston isn't in the realm of possibility, Mayor Walsh acknowledged that himself.

That's us. No doubt that Amazon will be growing here, no doubt.

I agree about the disingenuous part. A company cannot have four headquarters. I think basically Amazon was handing out a “headquarters” title to the cities that were willing to pony up. I wonder if Amazons plans for expansion in Boston would have been any different if it had won? I suspect not.
