They are definitely out there, and for example tags listing photos with "Pet Friendly" in its browser.

Sounds like you have some pretty good skills that would be translatable to this area. You sound like you're more than willing to roll up your sleeves and hustle, which is 1/2 the battle. Some of your challenges will be selling yourself and beating out those with impressive resumes.

To accomplish difficult changes, it takes a positive attitude and a willingness to take a little risk. It does sound like she has that. Of course it helps a lot to have a resume' with an Ivy League background when applying for a job in this area, but it's not a strict requirement - I went to state schools for both my BS (Rutgers) and PhD (UNH), and I have never worked in anything but a national lab and marquee companies... My colleagues have largely been Ivies, but I know my stuff as well or better than they do, I am creative, and I work hard - and it's true those aren't the only things that matter for success in the real world, but they do help...

Pfffft, Rutgers! What a loser. I heard you guys turn and run when you saw the Yale kids walking towards you up the street.

No one is impressed by Rutgers or UNH diplomas. My advisor at UNH told me when I first entered his lab - you'd better do well here if you want to go places, because it won't hurt you that you came to UNH, but it won't help you either. That was good, frank advice. And all I am saying is, sure a big name brand on your sheepskin helps, but one shouldn't think that if they don't have that, that they don't have a chance. You never want to beat yourself by being afraid to try.

In your price range, your options are going to be somewhat limited. My advice is to not rule out living in an area with lots of students. Why? Because these are safe & fun areas with plenty of things to do, many food options, etc. And, more importantly, the alternative in your price range is probably going to be places where you won't be comfortable living. Being around college students is way better than being around gangs and drug dealers.

If you go with a roommate or 2, you can choose almost anywhere you want to live (assuming the dogs are allowed).

After you've been in the workplace for 5 years or so, your diploma doesn't matter nearly as much as your employment history.

This thread is missing all the essentials you really need to know when moving to Boston:

The Yankees suck, part of the general NYC inferiority complex

"Regular" coffee has cream & sugar in it

Deflategate is a lie, Bill Belichick is the only acknowledged deity

A traffic circle is called a rotary, using your turn signals (blinkahs) is a sign of weakness

Generally, housing costs and the condition of the rental housing stock, anything automobile, and the overall northeast urban vibe with pace of life, impatience, and daily human interaction will be the big adjustments from Wichita.

Don't disagree; but the glass half full perspective is --

ethnic diversity, alternative lifestyles, lots of dog people, topography, cultural amenities, extensive public transportation system, amtrak service from bos to DC and points in between, large airport with international flights, and last but not least, passion about pro sport teams.
