Well, I'm not at all sure about some of the remarks above. I moved to Cambridge from Philadelphia 5 years ago for a job and was astonished to find that Boston was years behind other cities in terms of diversity training for employees. It did not bother anyone in the research group where i worked that the only people of color were in support positions. After several years, they tried to recruit black scientist/mathematicians and could find few who really wanted to move to Boston. Just my experience, but i've found that folks in New England really believe they're not biased but it just takes a more subtle expression. Not that they're malevolent, but they don't really think they need to learn about other cultural mores. Have you ever read "unpacking the invisible backpack" by Peggy MacIntosh? The folks where I worked finally did that exercise and were dumbstruck by the experience.
