The worst is traveling and telling people you live in Massachusetts and they automatically assume Boston. And then having to explain that not all of Massachusetts is Boston. Then explaining that I live 20 or so miles north of Hartford really throws them off.

But I was raised in Brookline, and never when asked back when I lived there did I say I was from Boston. Always Brookline, even though the street right behind our house was Boston.

Respect. Imagine being from Brookline and claiming a city with poor people in it.

Definitely wasn't rich growing up. My parents owned a pizza joint in East Boston in the late 60's through the 80's. My dad bought a dump in Brookline and spent countless late nights renovating it.

I just don't bother, what's it matter really? They don't care. Especially now. When I was growing up near Fall River and people assumed Boston, I sometimes tried to explain that I was actually much closer to Providence (and even went to school in RI), but it doesn't make a difference.

Now I'm in Somerville and I never try to correct people. I know that Somerville, Cambridge, Brookline, etc. are separate municipalities, but it mostly doesn't work that way outside of the Northeast. In most cities, Somerville, Cambridge, Brookline, and possibly even Chelsea, Revere, and others would absolutely have been annexed into the principal city. Where I live in Somerville is closer to downtown Boston than Buckhead is to Downtown Atlanta, Astoria Queens is to New York City Hall, North Philadelphia is to Philadelphia City Hall, Hollywood is to downtown LA, Balboa Park is to San Francisco City Hall, or Embassy Row is to Capitol Hill in DC. Massachusetts cut up their map quite a bit differently than most other places, and our layout is quirky. So I don't fault people for not "getting it," and I certainly am not going to correct someone who says Somerville is Boston. I mean, it's not far off from telling someone that Big Ben isn't really in London. Sure, it's technically correct. It's not in London. But most practical purposes, it is.

Reminder:

Boston is 48.42 square miles of land (31000 acres)

The entire city could fit inside two of Phoenix AZ's Parks

(1) The Sonoran Preserve (18000+ acres)
(2) South Mountain Park (16000+ acres)
