I love regional accents. I was disappointed when I went to Boston how few of them I heard - but then yeah, we only really explored the touristy parts.

People sometimes poke fun at my Chicago accent, but usually it's more like mild amusement.

Yes. This is one of our favorite youtube clips. Phil is or was a teacher at Chelsea high I believe. Such a great guy. What a great time capsule to be captured.

My mother is 87 and was born in Cambridge, raised in Winthrop. She left Massachusetts when she married at 24 and has lived in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Maryland. She still calls her niece Linder and puts her clothes in a drah. Otherwise you'd probably not figure how where she was born. All of my relatives in Winthrop have very strong Boston accents.

But doesn't a Boston accent hinder some or many pursuing professional careers or positions, either here or especially out of state? Or was that the way it used to be? Not sure why it would necessarily change, though.

Maybe a silly question, but would you think differently of your surgeon or dentist if he or she has a thick Boston accent?

I certainly have heard of locals, at least years back and especially those in tv/radio, who had to take speech classes (is the one in Washington Square around 1600 Beacon Street in Brookline still operating?).

But can we come up with a list of Boston tv and radio personalities who have the accent? Not many, period. At least nowadays. They're seemingly all generic and polished, not that it's a bad thing.

I met a young female tourist from California years ago who thought it's sexy if a Boston male had a Boston accent.

...

I occasionally listen to the venerable WGN 720 AM online from Chicago for talk shows and news. It's amazing how some of the hosts or traffic reporters, especially females for some reason, have a distinct Chicago accent; that'd be unusual in Boston on WBZ, WRKO, WBUR, WGBH. In fact, a WBZ radio traffic reporter stands out to me, as he seems to have a Philly-type accent in this market. Hmmm..
