A friend of mine is looking for a trustworthy driving service that will pick up a child (who will be seven years old in September) at his mother's apartment (the mother will be there to hand over the child) and bring him to school, and later pick him up and take him home (the mother will be there). The mother and child live in Mattapan; the school is in Chestnut Hill. My friend is the child's grandparent, who works full time, does not live with the child or the mother. (the child's mother does not have a car).

Neither the school nor other parents of students there have been able to find any transportation/carpool that would work in this situation.

Does anyone have any ideas?

What is their budget? Is there no other suitable school for the child that is closer to Mattapan? That's a lot of travel time daily for someone so young.

I don't know what the budget is; I am just trying to find someone/a service that my friend can then contact. My friend and the child's mother both wanted the child to go to the school in Chestnut Hill.

How much would an Uber or Lyft cost? I suppose find out and use that as a cost guideline. Then post an ad on craigslist in the gig section. Perhaps a retiree might like a courier job like this. Or if the hours mesh, someone living in Mattapan and working in Chestnut might also pick up a job like this. Then run a background check and get references from the candidates. Going from Mattapan to Chestnut Hill is not a common route.

I would suggest your friend sign up for a Care.com account. There are usually people looking for jobs like that on there.

I notice that Kango, Zum and HopSkipDrive have transportation services for kids.

HopSkipDrive is for kids 6+. Seems they sometimes require childcare experience or nanny experience on some of these services? Along with a supposed strict background check.

I saw that the Atlantic magazine in October 2018 had a story on rideshare for kids.

Some don't know, but Uber and Lyft do NOT permit unaccompanied minors. Not sure if the minimum age is 17 or 18 to ride alone. Some or many of their drivers seem to ignore that rule, but others will drive away and collect a $5 cancel fee from your account, according to my research on a Uber drivers' forum.

Zemcar is another option - they are an Uber like service for minors.

I checked Zemcar; the cutoff age for the child is 8; and my friend's grandchild is almost 7.
