Default Is East Cambridge a nice/safe area to live in?

Hi,
I am moving to Boston this summer, and am thinking of renting a 1BR in East Cambridge, because of its proximity to MGH, where I will be working, and also because it appears more affordable than the Beacon Hill area. Is this area safe? If not, any thoughts on a better area to look into?
thank you so much!

It is very safe. It is on the cheap side because of 't' access and as one of my friends put it, it is a bit townie. There is Kendall and Lechemere depending on what part of East Cambridge you are interested in. There is really not that much in East Cambridge. Inman Square and Central Square are close by though.

It is pretty safe. I was looking into moving out there about a year ago but decided not to only because it was a long commute to my work. East Cambridge has a lot of Portuguese families and some young professionals. I agree with the last post that there isn't too much around there besides the Galleria, and it is a little townie-ish - check out "The Courtside" to get a real wiff of that! It's simply amazing!
