Default Harvard post-doc with 5 pets!

My husband-to-be and I are moving to Boston in August from Cincinnati. He'll be post-doc'ing at Harvard and I am still looking for a job. Problem is, our blended family includes 2 (large) dogs and 3 cats. Because of our zoo, we were thinking of trying to rent a single family house.

Any suggestions for where to look that:
(1) He can take the T to Harvard
(2) Has single family rentals $2300 and under

We'd also consider duplexes or townhouses... I'd just hate to have an occasionally barking dog annoy our new neighbors!

Thanks!

maybe Watertown? I don't know how much SFHs go for in terms of rent, but Watertown tends to be somewhat inexpensive, but nice, and you can take the bus right into Harvard Sq. also, maybe check out Medford (the #96 bus goes to Harvard Sq)

I did a search for single family rentals in all eastern MA towns for anything less than $3500 on both Boston.com and apts.com and found 5 options only. 4 actually don't look like SFH's.

Including townhouses that allow big dogs and cost less than 2300 for a two bdrm I got 8 places.

Dog friendly isn't easy for renting. Most dog owners have condos. I know one guy who walks three dobies in the Fens and he rents the dobies their own apt.

If you're looking for more land there are occasionally nice SF rentals in Concord, Lincoln, and Lexington. Yes, it's hard to find landlords that accept dogs but it is possible. I saw a 4bd 2ba colonial for rent in Concord on 1/2 acre for $1975 where pets are fine. Concord's a lovely town with very highly regarded schools. From there your husband could drive to the Alewife station (less than 20) minutes and from Alewife I think it's about 6 T stops to Harvard station.
