Default Commuting to Broadway Station

Hi,

I've just accepted a position in South Boston near the Broadway Station on the Red Line. We're looking at living somewhere in the Southern Suburbs, and I would like to commute via public transit. We've identified several communities that may fit our budget that have various commuting options.

I would like to get an idea of how feasible the following options are to get to Broadway:

1. Live somewhere convenient to the Red Line (Mattapan or Braintree branches), either walking distance or driving distance. What is the parking situation like at the end stations (Quincy/Braintree or between Mattapan and Milton)? I would probably be leaving for work by 7AM at the latest. Is it really $5.00 a day? Is there monthly parking available? Are there convenient buses to connect to the T?

2. Live close to a station on one of the lines that seems to connect with the Red line at Braintree or Quincy (Greenbush, Kingston/Plymouth, or Middleborough/Lakeville). Is this transfer feasible? Are there any stations where parking is readily available along these lines (preferably within about 30 mins of South Station, like to keep my door-to-door commute 45 mins to 1 hour max)? Any stations where there is never parking?

3. Live close to any of the previously mentioned lines, or Providence or Franklin lines, take the train to South Station, then back on the red line to Broadway. How is this connection? Is there another way to get across the water - walk? Bus? Any good communities where parking is a good option?

Thanks, and I may be back to ask information on specific towns once we narrow in some more.

Sure, all that is feasible. Connecting to the Red Line at South Station is easy and in the AM, a Red line train arrives about every 5 minutes, you don't even need a schedule.

If you go to MBTA.com choose the system map, you can click on the individual stations and get specific info like parking rates, number of spaces, and connecting public transit. The best approach imo is fewer tranfers- particularly in the burbs. It's easy transferring in town at major hubs like South Station, but timing a bus to the commuter rail is a far less exact science. Best bets in order:

1. Red Line directly to Southie.
2. Commuter rail to Red Line.
3. Bus to train.

Directly across from the Broadway T are two luxury condo buildings, Court Square Press and the Macallen Building. They have a pool, gym, garage parking, concierge, you name it. I was invited to a benefit held at the pool terrace of the Macallen. Really gorgeous. Later I went in the Court Square Press and it's not as new or modern, but I liked the post and beam, brick look. Anyway, if you can afford getting in one of these buildings, it could solve your problem.
