We're moving from Florida to Boston this summer and we're looking to live in a neighborhood with nearby mass transit/easy access to the city (especially near Theater district and Mass General). In an ideal world, we'd live in an area that feels like the city (i.e. restaurants and shops), offers mass transit, but is also pet-friendly in a safe area. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Most areas are pet friendly, but some have pet limits of only two to three dogs. I have four so my search was very challenging. If you are looking for a private rental, most landlords do not want pets and at the most just a cat. As far as areas with mass transit I would suggest Newton or maybe Arlington in terms of a city feel or close proximity to the city that are known for being pretty safe. Two years ago Newton was known as the safest city in the country for it's size. I'm sure other's will offer their opinions. Good luck.

If you want to live right in Boston/the city, you might want to check out Back Bay (tree lined streets, brick walks, etc), as well as the South End (of Boston).

Also, West Cambridge, on the other side of the Charles River, has a great energy- both a city feel (a few blocks from Harvard Square) and a community feel, at the same time. The Fresh Pond Parkway, for dog walks, etc is close by.
If you're a younger couple, you might also want to check out the Davis Square area in Somerville. (Though, not so sure about finding alot of pet-friendly rentals there..)
All of these areas are extremely close to public transportation/the subway (the "T", as they call it here)..

Quincy is a more affordable town that is right on the red line, which has a stop at MGH.
Dog-acceptable rentals are a real problem. You might do better with a private landlord than a complex of some sort.
Best wishes. I didn't get dogs until I owned with a fenced yard. My town has a limit of five, I think, but I ignore it. They just don't want commercial breeding going on.
