Default Stupidest Thing About The T

I'm watching the bar across the street get out right now. It reminded me -

The one most ridiculous stupid boffo about the T is how it closes at 1am instead of running till 230am on Friday and Saturday night. Damn, just the number of drunks they could get off the road would pay for itself with one saved accident.

Anybody have any idea why this is?

There's probably just not enough demand to justify the added expense.
Yep, that seems to be it: MBTA May Terminate Night Owl Bus Service - The Tech
Unfortunately the Commonwealth doesn't give the MBTA actual money when they prevent an accident, so the current system will stay in place until the someone with authority decides its a priority.

I agree, all night service, even extremely sparse, would be nice. I really don't like it, though, when people use the T being closed as an "excuse" to drive around drunk.

I always assumed it was because Taxi Drivers have some weird deal with the city, but I have no proof to back up that assertion.

I'd agree though it's dumb. I moved to SD and while the public transportation is not as expansive (the coverage could be blamed on the fact that San Diego is huge) they do have trolleys that run once an hour after 1:30 on weekends. I've caught the Trolley home drunk and tired at like 3 or 4 am several times. I don't see how running at that kind of a schedule would really hurt the T.

For such a supposedly liberal, socially conscious state like MA, you'd think they run the T just to get the (college) children home safely....
