Visit woodstuff.com for reasonably-priced beds (not necessarily wood), shelving, custom- or ready-made desks, etc. This business has physical locations in Waltham and Norwood, and makes home deliveries. You can do everything but open the door for the delivery crew from your computer.
Brighton, Harvard, and Commonwealth Ave's in Allston form a triangle; along each of these streets you'll find inexpensive and "outlet" stores that'd more than meet your furnishing and accessory needs. The mattress, box spring, and bed frame I purchased in Allston sixteen years ago for short money have held up fine n' dandy. Ride the "B" trolley of the Green Line to the Harvard/Comm Ave intersection and launch your quest from there, or disembark at Packard's Corner (Brighton/Comm Ave corner) and work your way westward.
Economy Hardware and "Basics" are also reputable in-town stores for good stuff cheap. There are lots of "America's 21st-century answer to Woolworth's," Family Dollar stores, in the bluer-collar parts of town as well.
