Hello Everyone,

i'm going to spend 6 month at the M.I.T. this winter and like to know more about prices in Boston/Cambridge.

How much is the monthly average cost of living?

Thanks a lot,
Donj

Donj,

Your biggest expense will probably be apartment rent. I don't know much about Cambridge but in Boston 1 bedroom will cost anywhere between $1000-$1500 a month. I know its a wide range, but it depends on location and size. You can save on rent by having roommates. MIT students tend to live in Cambridge rather than Boston since its closer to campus and can be a little cheaper as well (Central Square, Kendal Square, not Harvard Square). Also, Boston side of the river from MIT is BU campus and BU dorms, so fewer apartments are for rent.

Thanks Boston6436 ...

$1000 - $1500 for a bedroom? The bedspread must be pure gold ...
Ok, there goes my dream of an excessive nightlife.

For living costs I have found these chart:

Cost of living in Boston, USA

Is it still up-to-date?

You probably want to talk to MIT housing since you're going to be there only for 6 months.

Most of the apartments do not like to rent for 6 months only. If you need furniture and short term, it may cost much more.

The numbers from your cost of living website is fairly accurate. The only exception is Food in college. My estimate would be they are 50-100% more expensive. I recall back a few years ago, all you can eat meal plan in most colleges were $20+/day.

If you are only going to MIT for 6 months, perhaps you can contact their housing department to see if they can help you out. I would imagine that they have a plethora of information for situations like these. Cheers!
