Hi-- I'm looking for a neighborhood where I could find a 3BR house/townhouse for $400K or less and not need a car. It doesn't have to be a huge house or have a lot of land or be in a trendy neighborhood-- just someplace safe. Any suggestions?

I moved to Arlington, MA about 2 years ago, it very safe, and affordable for boston standards. There is a nice town center (including 2 grocery stores and a movie theater), and there is frequent bus service to Harvard Square and the Alewife T station on Massachusetts Avenue. Not sure what the real estate market is like, currently, but you should be able to find a townhouse for $400K.

$400K can get you into many communities. It depends on the condition of the house/condo.
I am assuming you are not talking about commuter rail. If you have to be near a subway station versus a bus stop. It will further limits you to the choice of towns. (Probably Brookline, Newton, Quincy, Braintree will be the towns I recommend). Checkout mbta.com for the subway, bus and commuter rail towns. |
